Snowmobile trail report

While the days are milder this week, overnight grooming is being planned weather permitting. Day time temps will be in the 30’s through Sunday with temps at night in the 20’s. Best riding is early in the day as trails will soften up by mid-afternoon with the milder weather.

GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY Reports trails overall are in fair to good condition. Grooming is planned for tonight weather
permitting. 11N has a water spot on it in which you can get around. Signs are posted so please use caution.
Also on trails 11N and 160 closer to the lake the snow is marginal. LOGGING IS PLANNED OFF SOUTH BOUNDARY ROAD SO WATCH FOR SIGNS AND PLOWED AREAS. 11S is in fair to good condition, logging is planned for the remaining of the season closer to the Wisconsin border signs are posted, use caution. Please remember the logging trucks have the right of way so when and if you see them please pull over….

Hurley area Snowmobile Trail Update as of Wednesday Feb. 1st, 2012

Snowfall to date is 86 inches. Snow Depth on the trails is 14 inches. The groomers report that the trails are in fair to good condition. Groomers will be out on the trails in the mornings. Unseasonable warm temps are in the forecast for the next 5 days with temps in the mid 30's during the day and 20's at night. Snow flurries possible today and Sunday. Best riding will be in the mornings. Trail conditions can change with heavy traffic and our groomers are doing everything possible to keep up on the weekends. Groomers will be out day or night so please pull off to the side of the trail to let them pass.

Lots of sleds, trail took a pounding this weekend as there were to many sleds and warmer temps for the groomers to keep up there were good trails and bad trails. Forecast is calling for some warm temps this week than its going to get cold and some snow in the forecast. Things are looking up for trail conditions Downhill and Cross Country skiing remain excellent and continue that way till the snow is gone. Sam

Our Big Snow Country Official Season Snowfall to date is 102" with 14" on the ground. Today will be mild with temps in the 30’s. Lower overnight temps which will keep the trails in good shape. Our weekend temps will be in the 20’s on Saturday and in the teens on Sunday with a chance of snow through Wednesday.

Hurley Area Snowmobile Trail Update as of 1/18/2012- Trails are open for the Season.

Snowfall to date is 82 inches. Snow in the forecast for Weds. evening and Thurs. The groomers were out and report the trail system to be in good to very good riding condition. Trail 11a has been rerouted due to logging in that area. Snowmobilers are asked to use trail 13 and trail along Island Lake Rd. Trail 15 is plowed.. If you see the groomers on the trails please pull over to the side of the trail for them to pass. If you are riding the trails, please use caution. We will update as conditions change.

It looks like we should receive 8-14 inches of snow through Friday with temps in the low teens.

GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY Reports Trail 2 is in fair condition, trail 8 to Tuula is in good condition, and 160 is in poor condition and has two wet spots so use caution. Trail 11S is groomed and is in good condition. Use caution as logging is getting underway on the last four miles of 11s so watch out for logging trucks.

GOGEBIC AREA GROOMERS Lake Gogebic groomers report trails are groomed and in good condition. The groomers will be out keeping the trails in shape with the new snow that is in the falling.

ABR TRAILS SKI REPORT --------------------------------------- SKIING & SNOW CONDITIONS: Wednesday PM We reset 25 k of classic track this morning and skiing was very good. The snow started this afternoon. We will groom tonight and again early in the AM. Wednesday AM We have been setting classic tracks along the skate lanes this morning and is turning out quite nice, we are able to pull in fresh cold dry powder. The skate lanes are not groomed today they were groomed yesterday. They may be a bit icy until they get groomed, maybe later today. Wolverine trail report: Grooming report 1-8-12: Groomed and track set. Trails are in excellent condition.

Temps will be dropping today with lows around 18 tonight. Snow is in the forecast Wednesday thru Friday with temps in the teens for the highs and single digits for the low…they are calling for 3 to 5 inches of snow for tonight and 4 to 6 inches on Thrusday,with snow through Friday. It’s a wait and see what we get out of the system.

Snowfall to date is 50 inches. The groomers report that 135 miles of trails are groomed and are in fair to good riding condition. Trail 3 to Saxon is closed at this time. Temperatures remain in the 20's. We will update as conditions change

What a turn out for the start of the Superior Snowshoe Walks year two, 220 people showed up for the first walk of the season also it was the first annual Mark Fitting snowshoe walk. Mark was the person behing the walks and passed away last summer a close friend and will be missed. Sam

So much for snow we are suppose to be getting a few inches of snow and so far a dusting not good. Cross Country Skiing is good to very good from what guests are telling us there are some thin spots and some ice but overall good. Snowmobiling we do have 3 sledders out riding they told Anne this morning that is was good but they are from Iowa so this maybe good to them I will try and find more info when they return. Sam

So much for the winter forecast of being colder then normal and average to above average snowfall. Way warmer and no snow so far and not looking good in the forecast for the next couple of weeks. Can only hope we get one of our famous snowstorms that sneak up on us and bury us with a ton of snow. SISU cross country ski race is the weekend of January 13 & 14Th so we need snow.

We had gotten alittle bit of snow yesterday...variable amounts from 1" to 3" but every little bit helps at this point. We have snow in the forecast for today and tonight with low temps in the teens. This will help to firm up our wet spots.

The good is downhill and cross country skiing are not bad and most people said it was good to very good. Snowmobiling on the other hand not good at all hardly any snow on the trails and last I heard groomers are still parked waiting for more snow. Forecast is not looking good with mild temps and just a chance of snow hope this changes and gets back to real winter. Sam

2 to 4 inches of heavy wet snow not bad its a start but its still wet underneath if you didn't plow or shovel to let the cold temps get to the wet stuff it will stay wet that's why I plowed everything so it can freeze again. Sam

6 inches of heavy snow fell today. The skiing is back to winter like conditions! The groomers are headed out tonight and will back out in force in the early AM We plan to have 55-60 km groomed for Friday and in very good to excellent shape.

What a mess warm temps wet heavy snow only a 1 or 2 inches makes for a big mess. The warm temps soften up the base of snow on the parking lot and back yard making a slushie mess that was fun to plow this morning. Some sod was removed but overall way better than I thought it would turn out with the warm temps. Forecast is calling for colder temps starting on the weekend with a chance of snow on and off will have to wait and see how much as its not looking like much. Sam

Full motel with the sno-cross race at Blackjack, cross country ski race at Wolverine and the Red Light Rally in Hurley. Not sure on the red light rally as there is not enough snow on the trails to hold up to many sleds before it will be down to dirt. Had to shovel this morning from blowing snow off the roofs and then plow in a few spots to clean up other than that a nice sunny day but cold. Sam

Forecast is calling for warm temps through Saturday reaching a high of 50 on Thursday this should take care of the snow we have. Why can't it just stay winter seeing its here but no it has to melt and make a mess and more of a mess when it snows again. My yard took a beating plowing now it will only get worse the next time I plow. Could you say a pray for my Brother in Law as he was at his camp yesterday when it blew up he has minor burns but is lungs aren't good camp was a total loss. Thanks Sam

Deer Hunting & snow

Spent the week deer hunting for most of the week just a few does then it snowed 6 to 8 inches and then the deer showed up. 6 does and one small 8 point buck came in around 4pm Saturday he was chasing a doe gave one iffy shot but let him go hoping he would go to my son's stand. Guess what 45 minutes later heard his shot and he got the 8 pointer right at dark. Sunday packed up can home to 8 inches of snow so had to put the plow on and clean up the mess. This was one of the hardest times I had plowing tearing up lawn banging of curbs truck took a beating not sure why but not good. Guess what forecast is calling for temps in the 40's close to 50 degrees this week snow will be gone and have do this all over again tearing up the yard. As long as the snow is here let it stay get cold and freeze up the ground and lets have winter. Sam

Last day to pack for rifle deer season as tomorrow head for camp for a week. Saturday we were at camp getting the plumbing fixed and to make sure everything was ready and getting blinds and tree stands ready. Not many deer especially bucks as there are very few showing up on trail cams. 700 photos over the last month 3 does, 5 coons and one very small bear not good but who cares its just nice to get out in the woods. Monday and Tuesday have been really nice temp and sun wise for November but snow is in the forecast for mid week. 3 to 5 inches are predicted but will wait and see what shows up every thing is put away and we are ready for the snow to come. My personal feeling is the snow can wait till the end of the month any earlier its a waste just makes a mess and melts anyway. Besides it rifle deer season I'm one that likes it warm and no snow I'm in the minority on this as most like it cold and snow on the ground. Sam

Another nice weekend at camp two more birds for the freeze, the dogs are getting better every weekend at hunting birds. Sunday hooked the plow up and checked it out to make sure it works and it does one more thing off the check list for winter. Long range forecast is calling for a colder winter with average to more than average snowfall. They can't predict the weather for a week and get it right so how can they know what winter will bring they must use the farmers almanac. Rifle deer season is two weeks away and not much sign of bucks have a trail cam out sense Oct. 1st. with 700 + pics one small spike the rest the same 3 does, 5 coons, 6 crows and one very small bear. Went to camp on Friday for the weekend but way to hot temps in the 80's came home Saturday afternoon. Did some bird hunting and boy what a week makes as there were birds everywhere to bad I couldn't hit anything must be the old shells. Started baiting for deer last weekend put out trail cam and there does not seem to be many deer have the same 3 does and that's it. Hank & Hanna are sure getting to be good bird dogs and the best thing they did it on there own with just a little coaching from me. Hank & Hanna I'm tired and its hot out. Sam

First weekend at camp and had a good time did some 4 wheeling made two loads of wood. It was nice to get some of the old group back at camp for a weekend just about everyone had a good time and good food hope this happens more often. Most of the painting is done one more small piece of trim to do and done for the season and half the deck to paint. Did get the repairs done to the deck that were rotting from water damage over the years. One last thing to repair is the overhang to keep the water off the East side of the deck. Sam

Looks a lot like rain outside so no painting but the good thing most of it is done. One door some trim and repair a corner of the building do to some water damage from run off from the roof. Saturday going to camp to mow lawn, weed eat and repair the satalite TV dish get camp ready for hunting season and 4 wheeling. Great time of the year to be outside and enjoy nature. Sam

We did find one corner of the building to have water damage from run off of the roof on to lower walkway so now have to fix it. Not sure how much damage but looks like it will take a few days to fix. I'm glad he stopped by the camp site that morning and we had a chance to talk for over an hour he will be missed by a lot of people. Boy did it get hot today 92 which is hot for us and humid now we are waiting for the sever thunderstorms to start they are just to the West of here and moving fast. We did manage to get 1& 3/4 rooms house cleaned as it was to hot to paint or go for a walk with the dogs. Nice out today a little cool but not bad with warmer temps coming but sure wish the rain would go away for awhile as it rained all night. Looks like it maybe a busy 4th but who knows till its over. After the 4th we are going camping for two weeks we are closing the motel as there is no one to watch so we are closing it. Can't wait to go camping and just relax sit on the beach, walk the dogs, ride bikes and the best seating around the camp fire. Just about done with another dorm room still a little more to do what a mess this room was in damage deposit will not be returned for this room. All but two dorm rooms were left in good shape the other two so much. Weight Watcher 5K walk Sunday starting at 1:00 pm leaving the motel and ended at the motel temps in the 70's with a chance of rain. Sam
